I’ve seen lots of super cool street art pictures before I visited Penang, and really those are the coolest things here in my opinion. If you only got a weekend in Penang, I recommend you spending one day on the beach, one day visit Georgetown,Little India and few temples. That’s what I did and I felt “just right”. Taking a flight from Kuala Lumpur is cheap, round trip if you book ahead costs $50. Air Asia usually has the best deals on flights inside Southeast Asia.
I feel really lucky got a great deal on Hard Rock Hotel for less than $50/night. From time to time hotel.com has promotions like buy 2 get 3re free, watch out for those. This place has it’s private beach and water park. It felt totally Disney. The rest activities are free, meal cost about $3-$5 each. drinks normally around $1 outside hotel and $3 in the hotel.
Sorry I looked so serious here, I probably was debating between having rice or noodle for lunch.
Georgetown heritage walk
It really was everything for me. The old colonial architectures, the street art and this rundown charm of this place. It was like a walk in the old Hongkong movies. Shops and bars all has very interesting interior, each place has it’s character. Tons of photo spot here if you are as instacrazy as I am.
Little India & Sri Mahamariamman Temple
Visit Sri Mahamariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu Temple in Penang. Hindu Temples are vey colorful and inside there are some very interesting sculptures of gods.
Little India, The music, the smell, the flashy rich colors and all the shops in little India is just totally Indian. You can also buy or got your traditional Indian dress tailored here. Like mine. Princess Picture reference below.
Thean Hou Temple & Kapitan Keling Mosque
After the Hindu culture experience, have a look at the Chinese and Muslim influence as well. They’re not very big so won’t take much time.
Enjoy dinner and drinks at Frendy Beach Bar
I like this place because of all the plants, lights and old music. It creates a feeling of back in time.
chill on Batu Ferringhi beach till Sunset
Might not be the most beautiful beach in Southeast Asia but it’s still really good for Malaysia. have a chill day, enjoy the sun and stay for sunset. It’s never crowded so you can peacefully chill and tan.
And if you want to take pictures in the beach I recommend GoPro or water proof phone case for situations like this.
Have a great weekend!
